The Apprentice week 9: The baby show

Seven candidates remained in week nine. For this task the candidates chose two products to sell at a baby show at Earls Court in London.

Debra fell in love with some very expensive rocking horses and decided to try to sell those despite their price being from £1,700 to £4,000. Neither she nor Ben managed to sell a single one. If either had negotiated a discount on the price from the manufacturer they could have sold at least one and won the task. But neither bothered to ask.

James seemed to know about the gynaecological aspects of giving birth under water and he and Yasmina decided to sell an inflatable birthing pool, despite the fact that only 2% of mothers gave birth that way. Margaret announced in the boardroom that they had sales of £722 for the pools which cost £76 each. That equates to nine and a half units. I wonder how they managed to sell half a pool.

Ignite with Kate and Howard was headed by Lorraine. Lorraine chose a £135 pushchair with a nifty way of opening and closing it with one hand. But she didn't learn how to open and close it when she had the expert with her. She didn't figure it out later that evening at the penthouse and she was still struggling with it the following morning at the show when clients thing if buying were looking on. Kate showed her how it was done.

Ignite also sold a baby helmet for parents worried about the risk of the infants bumping their heads. Their sales were £1,660, more than double those of Empire and they were soon off for their treat, the drawing of their caricature by Gerald Scarfe.

Yasmina escaped the boardroom and James chose to bring back Ben and Debra, all making their fourth appearance there in the nine shows. It was Ben who would not be making a fifth appearance. But he does have a scholarship at - er- where was it - that he can now take up.
