I'd Do Anything - cheerio to four Olivers

It's Saturday evening again and only five Nancys remain to fight it out. This week apparently the girls chose their own songs, and the results are very mixed.

After singing "Consider Yourself" with the Olivers, Jodie is the first to take the stage. She's singing "Holding out for a hero" and it seems she's doing well but we can't really hear it at home because the orchestra drowns out her voice - an often recurring problem in this series. The panel praises her, as does Andrew Lloyd Webber, although he does state that her dancing looks like Meatloaf.

Rachel follows with "I will always love you" and the panel has a lot of nice things to say. Nevertheless Denise still worries if Rachel is showing enough warmth and both she and Andrew say they want to see the "real" Rachel in her performance. After that it's time to look at Sam, who has had the honor of working with no other than Idina Menzel because she chose to sing "Defying Gravity" from the musical Wicked. It's a bold choice and she pulls it off okay, even though the panel agree she did not manage to keep it exciting all the way throughout the song.

It's time to choose the last Oliver to go through to the semi-final and it's Jonny. The remaining four boys who have not been chosen get a warm send-off with not only lots of footage of their work throughout the series but also a lot of solos during their group song, "Reach". It's sad to see them go but the song also shows us why they didn't make the cut, as they struggle more with the choreography and lyrics than the other eight boys.

Back to the Nancys and Jessie is singing "How do I live without you". It's a nice effort but Andrew says she probably should have chosen another song as this one is not right for her. The panel is not very impressed, but Barry says she should not let the criticism get to her too much. Niamh is last and she's also getting a lot of criticism for her rendition of "Don't speak". She is trying to show her tough side but the panel agree that in doing so she looked younger and more vulnerable than she's ever done. Andrew says something about wanting to protect her voice which means he definitely does not want her to do 8 shows a week - his comments sound like advice to the public to let Niamh go this week.

After a recap of the girls' performances and the numbers to dial, there is room for one last song. It's the long awaited Joseph-and-Nancy performance in which former Josephs Keith, Ben, Rob, Lewis and Daniel (in horrible silver pants) team up with the girls for "Dancing in the street". It's a fun performance to watch but mainly for the guys who look happy and relaxed. The girls are struggling a bit more, especially Jessie who cannot hide the fact that she still can't move graciously in high heels, and Niamh and Keith who are a couple during the song but never even seem to look at each other. We haven't seen them in the short rehearsal footage either, can it be they just did not hit it off?

And then the show is over again and we get to 9.30 to vote this week, so get those votes in for your favourites and then come on over to our forum to discuss it all!
