Samantha's dream of being Nancy is crushedThe first part of the final "I'd Do Anything" to find a new Nancy for the West End left and the pressure was really showing on the girls. The show opened with all the Oliver and Nancy contenders giving a fabulous performance to the title song and made some of us realise how much we missed the ones that have got away. Andrew declared that Sam was the heart-stopper, Jodie the heart-warmer and Jessie the heart-breaker. However, it's the night for the three finalists (all appearing in Nancy's trademark red tonight) and they didn't disappoint. First up was Jodie singing "Son of a Preacher Man" which I personally thought was fabulous but Andrew and Cameron were rather less enthusiastic and Andrew very cruelly called her an outsize talent. John Barrowman stuck up for Jodie though telling her she was a very believable Nancy. Sam was next singing "Anyone Who Had a Heart" - an emotional performance from Sam and the panel told her that with six months to go before the curtains open in the West End, she could certainly be fashioned into Nancy but it was a heck of a gamble. Jessie sang "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face," which was vocally great - Cameron and Andrew were practically falling over themselves to agree that Jessie is their Nancy, Cameron told her she was born to play the role. John Barrowman once again expressed doubts regarding her consistency. The three winning Olivers and the three remaining Nancys then performed duets from musicals. Firstly Jodie and Laurence gave a really warm performance of "Getting to Know You" which showed Jodie's motherly instincts to a T. Sam and Harry sang "Singing in the Rain" a slightly odd choice for an adult and child and I don't feel that Harry's voice is as good as some of the Olivers who have been rejected. Jessie and Gwion were picked out by Andrew and Cameron as being the best duet with their performance of "Truly Scrumptious". Finally the three final Nancys, after a coaching session with Liza Minelli earlier in the week, sang "Maybe This Time," another odd choice of song as Sarah had already performed it in an earlier round. However, all three showed they were worthy finalists in this number and received a standing ovation, it was a real show-stopper! Later this evening we will discover which of the two Js will become Nancy. Are one or two of the judges biased in favour of one of the girls? I couldn't possibly comment. It's all down to the public apparently so get voting now for your favourite and discuss the show in the I'd Do Anything forum |
