Only Men Aloud! is the Last Choir Standing

After several minutes of recap the final two choirs each had one last chance to persuade the voting public to pick up their phones and vote.

First Ysgol Glanaethwy sang 'All That Jazz' from the musical 'Chicago' which was perhaps not the best song they could have chosen. Then Only Men Aloud gave a spine-tingling version of the Eric Carmen classic 'All By Myself'.

After several more minutes of recap with clips from throughout the entire series at last the lines were closed and it was time to announce the Last Choir Standing. But first Nick Knowles decided to put the judges on the spot asking them to say who in their view should be the winner. Sharon and Russell both chose Only Men Aloud! and Suzy chose Ysgol Glanaethwy because they were exactly representative of what the show was all about.

At last the waiting was over and it was declared that Only Men Aloud! was the Last Choir Standing and their musical director Tim was presented with the trophy. There was much jubilation when Only Men Aloud! heard that they had been invited to perform at the final of the BBC3 radio Choir of the Year, but even better was to come - they had also been invited to appear at the Royal Variety Performance.

Only Men Aloud! stood out to me right from the very start and in my view the voting public definitely got it right. Well done to Tim and the boys, and very well done too to the runners-up Ysgol Glanaethwy.

Last Choir Standing has given us a few weeks of wonderful entertainment and I can only admire the commitment, enthusiasm and sheer hard work put in by all of the choirs involved. If the show awakens an interest in choral singing among the wider public then that can only be a good thing. When the show returns for a new series there are a few small changes that could be made to improve it but it really doesn't need much tweaking to make it a real rival for other TV talent contests that might be around.

I hope Tim's nan is going to enjoy her glass of sherry this evening!
