Last Choir Standing: Five choirs standingThe last five choirs each had two chances to persuade the public to vote to keep them in the competition. After a group performance of Queen's 'One Vision' Grenville's City of Bath Male Voice Choir began the proceedings with a rather insipid version of 'Can't take my eyes off you'. Russell acknowledged their dedication, while Sharon wanted more passion (when does she not?) and Suzy thought that they were a little flat in places. Next to sing was ACM Gospel Choir with a rather strange arrangement of 'Stand by Me'. Sharon loved their passion (of course) and they made her cry. I hope the BBC has a good stock of tissues - they need them with her around! Suzy praised them for the unexpected and courageous arrangement, while Russell declared that their initials ACM stood for Absolute Choral Magic. The BBC wardrobe department had spent so much on Revelation's fluorescent pink outfits that poor Myleene was left with just a bin liner for her dress. They sang 'Higher Love' which left all three judges somewhat underwhelmed, though Russell praised soloist David. Suzy thought that it was too solo-focussed and wanted more harmonies, while Sharon thought that they could have done more but were still gorgeous. Fourth choir of the night was Only Men Aloud! singing 'When you say nothing at all'. Sharon loved their versatility but this song didn't really do it for her. Russell acknowledged that last week's performance was difficult to follow and they hadn't managed to top it, but it was still a good performance. Suzy thought that chorally it was the best they had ever given and couldn't fault it technically but still felt there was something missing. Last to sing were young Welsh choir Ysgol Glanaethwy with a breathtaking performance of classical piece 'O Fortuna' from 'Carmina Burana'. Last week Russell had described some of their performances as 'forgettable' but he said this one was unforgettable, absolutely incredible. Sharon was completely flabbergasted and Suzy said that they truly communicated the music and showed the possibilities of the voice. It was an outstanding performance by a very young choir of a piece often murdered by far more senior voices. All credit to them for the performance of the night. For their second piece the City of bath Male Voice Choir gave a rather flat rendition of 'Wonderful World'. Suzy said that it was a bad arrangement and the tuning suffered, and Sharon agreed. Russell wants them to get back their 'wall of sound'. ACM Gospel Choir sang a jazzed-up version of the 1968 Jackie DeShannon song 'Put a little love in your heart'. Sharon thought it was fantastic and showed excellent use of soloists with no one person hogging the limelight. Suzy enjoyed it so much she didn't want them to stop, and Russell thought they were awesome. Revelation's second song was 'Flying without wings' and for the first time we saw David's brother given a solo of his own - which made me wonder why it's always David doing the solos when his brother's voice is so much better. Russell thought it was incredible, fantastic. Sharon thought they played it safe but it still touched her, and Suzy agreed that it was a very simple arrangement but thought that it suited the song. Next came Only Men Aloud showing their versatility yet again with a superb interpretation of 'Goldfinger'. Suzy claimed that she is never shaken, but admitted to being a little bit stirred by their sensational performance. Russell and Sharon both said that they were back to their best. The final song of the show from Ysgol Glanaethwy was the Jackson Five's 'I want you back' which Sharon thought was a good contrast to their first offering but would have liked it funkier. Russell loved their versatility and Suzy thought they were amazing. This week we don't have to wait so long for the clash of the choirs as the BBC has decided to screen the results show later on Saturday evening rather than making us wait twenty four hours. Which two will have to sing again, which one will not be singing next week? |
