Last Choir Standing: Six choirs standing - Sense of Sound voted off

The Last Choir Standing judges had selected the six choirs they liked best and this show was the first time for viewers to vote on their favourites.

Each choir only performed once in the one hour show on Saturday night and much of the programme was padding. It took 13 minutes and 10 seconds before the first act started singing.

Ysgol Glanaethwy chose the Queen song Bohemian Rhapsody. This would have been a good choice if they had anyone who could sing the Freddie Mercury bits but the choir is mostly women and a few girlie-men who can't do Freddie Mercury. The whole performance was very high-piched as a result and demonstrated the limitations of this act.

Revelation performed a very insipid version of Fields of Gold. There was no piano in the backing track and this must have been about the worst version of this song I have heard - more like Fields of Warm Porridge.

The ACM Gospel Choir sang September and struggled with the audio balance being wrong, something which is now a traditional problem with BBC Saturday night shows but the first time it had affected this series.

The Bath Male Choir sang Desperado - but this was nothing special.

Sense of Sound featured three or four lead singers including a girl with a wasp's nest on her head singing Smiley Faces. The arrangement was innovative but rather monotonous.

Only Men Aloud! danced around with walking sticks while singing Don't Dance on My Parade. I won't.

If these are the best choirs in the whole of the UK the BBC could find this series in in trouble. It is not helped by featuring Nick Knowles as a wooden co-presenter shouting lines read from an autocue. It is unlikely either he or Last Choir Standing will be back on Saturday nights next year.

In the Sunday show, the choirs with the fewest votes from the viewers had to sing again. Revelation sang Lovely Day and were saved 2-1 by the judges. Sense of Sound sang Gabriel, a uniquely written song which switched between lullaby and cacophany. This was appropriately their last performance.

Five choirs survive until next Saturday when the results show will be screened on Saturday instead of Sunday.
