Thai King celebrates Diamond Jubilee

King Rama IX marked his 60th anniversary on the throne today. The King is the world’s longest-serving monarch.

The King wore a golden gown and greeted the crowd from the balcony of the Royal Palace where he made a five minute speech appealing for unity after months of political upheaval.

Queen Sirikit was by The King’s side as he appealed for national unity, telling his subjects they should “synchronise their thoughts, minds and behaviour for the good of the Thailand.”

“Unity is a basis for all Thais to help preserve and bring prosperity to the country in the long run,” he told the crowd. “If Thais uphold these ethics, it will ensure that Thailand will stand firmly.”

King Rama IX, born in the United States and educated in Switzerland is much loved by his people, a crowd of one million strong welcomed the King’s appearance on the royal balcony with roar and chants of “Long Live the King”.

Heads of states and representatives of royal houses from 25 countries - including the Emperor of Japan, the Duke of York and Queen of the Netherlands - are expected to attend the celebrations. A five-day public holiday has been declared for the Diamond Jubilee festivities.
