Carole Middleton fails to make her daughter a princess

The media's gloves are off and Carole Middleton's alleged social climbing ways have been revealed.

According to the Mail On Sunday, Carole Middleton has been devastated by the breakup of daughter Kate's relationship with Prince William. A close source told the Mail On Sunday: "Carole is seething at her daughter being humiliated. All her plans have gone up in smoke and she really wasn't expecting it. She has invested years in this.

"There's no doubt that Kate loved William but it hasn't helped that, in the background, Carole has been encouraging her forward every step of the way."

Meanwhile an un-named Royal source (which is believed to be James Whittaker) has told the Mail On Sunday that Carole was the source of much debate and concern to the royal family. The Mail On Sunday article stated: "Indeed, it is a trait that has earned Carole the moniker of Meddling Middleton among some of William's circle and 'raised question marks' over her at the highest levels of that circle."

The source said: "Put bluntly, the Queen seems to like Kate's father, Michael, but the courtiers sense that there are big question marks over the mother," according to one Royal source.

"She is pushy, rather twee and incredibly middle-class. She uses words such as Plea'sed to meet you', 'toilet' and 'pardon'.

"The irony is that Carole has been so busy pushing her daughter forward and doing her best to groom her for Royalty that she's rather missed the point that she might not fit in herself."

Far from being terrible traits, these are the less serious accusations leveled at Carole Middleton. Another source, this time a friend told the Mail On Sunday about Carole Middleton's desire for a better standard of social acceptance for her children. The friend said: "Her business was very much set up to pay for her children's public-school fees. That was what motivated her."

Of William's friendship with Kate, the friend added: "Once they had met, Carole never missed an opportunity to encourage the friendship.

"William got on well with Carole. He liked flopping down on the sofas in their Berkshire home, enjoying the normality of that.

"The Queen was fond of Kate and liked her father, but let's just say there was a feeling that Mrs Middleton was not right or acceptable."

The royal source was very unforgiving of Mrs Middleton: "But there are some social mountains you just can't scale. You can't become Royal through sheer force of will.

"Kate's background was always a bit of a laughing point among William's friends. They openly mocked her mother's air-stewardess credentials, greeting Kate with a whispered chorus of "Doors to manual".

"There'd be jibes asking Kate if she was going to wheel in the trolley and when the food service would start. All pretty juvenile stuff, but these are former Eton chaps who are permanently stuck in that sort of humour.

"Carole's whole approach is very aspirational. But re-laying your front drive and trimming the wisteria around your front door isn't going to make your home, or your daughter, fit for a Prince."
