It's still cloak and dagger time for Prince William and Kate Middleton who are determined that the state of their relationship (whatever it is!) be kept out of the headlines. At yesterday's Concert for Diana, Kate Middleton was seated three rows behind the Prince William in the VIP section. In contrast to Prince Harry's girlfriend Chelsy Davy who sat beside Harry out front in the Royal Box.
From the looks of things at the concert the seating suggested that Kate and William are no longer an item. For surely if they were they'd have sat next to each other as Harry and Chelsy Davy did? But sources say William chose this arrangement to avoid speculation about their relationship taking over the concert and being the focus of too much camera time. In the latter he was successful. Cameras occasionally focused on Kate Middleton but for the most part the lenses were focused on those at the front of the Royal Box and the other members of the Royal and Spencer families seated behind it. Nevertheless reports continue that Kate and William are still very much a couple despite the look of things.
Kate left the concert separately and did not attend the after party. However, the day before the concert Kate was spotted entering the Princes official London residence Clarence House at midnight. She had left her car parked at a Mayfair car park that was later picked up by a royal aide. She was spotted returning to her Chelsea flat a few hours later at 4am.
Said a source, "They are of course close friends and have remained so since April. But they both want space and do not want to conduct their friendship with the added attention and pressure of more speculation.
"They particularly did not want their friendship to be the focus of media attention. Yesterday was about Diana and celebrating her life and work."
