Spanish state visit to Thailand

Their Majesties the King and Queen of Spain have paid a state visit to Thailand. They arrived at Bangkok airport where there were received by the King Rama IX and Queen Shirikit and other Thai officials including the Prime Minister, the deputy Prime Minister and the Thai ambassador to Madrid.

A few hours into the visit, King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia visited the Maha Jesadabondin pavilion were the Governor of Bangkok presented Their Majesties with the golden Key of the City, after the presentation of the keys, the King made a short speech were he thanked the Thai people for their “magnificent hospitality”.

The day after their arrival, the King Juan Carlos had audiences with the Thai Prime Minister, the President of the National Assembly and the head of Thailand’s High Court. After the King and Queen hosted a reception in the Oriental Hotel for Spaniards who live and work in Thailand, Cambodia and Laos in which the King congratulated them for their contributions to strengthening friendship and cooperation between Spain and these three countries.

Later that day, the Thai King hosted a formal dinner in honor of the Spanish King and Queen at the royal palace. King Juan Carlos made a speech were he expressed his congratulations to the Thai King and Queen for their sixtieth anniversary on the throne, King Juan Carlos also expressed his condolences for the boxing day tsunami that hit Thailand and other countries in the Indian ocean. The King also expressed his admiration for the way the Thai people handle the situation.

A day before they were due to leave, the King officially opened the Grand Hyatt Erawan hotel were he presided over the Thai-Spanish economic forum while Queen Sofia alongside Queen Sirikit visited the Bang-Pa-In palace were she learned about some of the projects the Queen Sirijit currently works on.

On the last day of their state visit, Their Majesties the King and Queen of Spain attended a reception hosted by the Thai Prime Minister were His Majesty expressed in a speech his satisfaction of “the will of both countries to work closely, to design and execute in a period of time a joint strategy”.

Their Majesties the King and Queen of Spain arrived back in Madrid where they were received by a guard of honor.
